Coach Janet Walsh awarded lifetime membership

3 min read

New Ross Boat Club recently marked the end of an era and the start of a bright new chapter as we say farewell to our esteemed Head Coach, Janet Walsh, who departed in January 2025 to pursue a once-in-a-lifetime career opportunity. Janet’s departure is bittersweet for everyone at the club, as her energy, vision, and unyielding commitment have been the backbone of New Ross rowing for nearly a decade.

During her tenure, Janet transformed the club’s youth development, building a vibrant environment where young rowers could thrive. Her leadership and coaching have brought New Ross Boat Club to national prominence, with many talented rowers such as Anna Brennan, Luke Sutton, Amy Barrett, and Ronan Gibbons to name but a few who achieved Irish honours under her watchful eye. These athletes’ successes are a testament to Janet’s ability to nurture talent, instill self-belief, and demand the best from every rower she mentored.

Beyond the medals and accolades, Janet’s true legacy lies in the culture she cultivated. She inspired junior rowers to dream big, worked tirelessly to support every squad, and encouraged many to take their first strokes on the Barrow and beyond. Her impact extended well beyond New Ross, representing the club with distinction as a coach for international squads, including the World Championships, and as a role model for women in rowing and coaching.

In grateful recognition of her exceptional service, New Ross Boat Club was proud to award Janet an Honorary Lifetime Membership at a packed clubhouse gathering in late January 2025. Current and former rowers, families, and club volunteers shared stories and memories of Janet’s impact on them, celebrating her talent, hard work, passion, and the personal confidence she instilled to so many members. Janet departs knowing she leaves a club stronger, closer, and more ambitious thanks to her efforts.

While she may be taking on new challenges, Janet’s influence will be felt on the river barrow and throughout our membership for years to come. We wish her the very best for her exciting journey ahead—and know her legacy will inspire generations of New Ross oarsmen and oarswomen to come.

Our chairperson Sean Sutton said this best when sharing the clubs gratitude to Janet for everything she has done for the club:
