New Ross Boat Club proudly celebrated a remarkable milestone this year as Michael (Mick) Bailey marked 50 years of membership with the club. This exceptional achievement reflects not only his personal dedication but also the enduring spirit and community that define New Ross Boat Club.

Mick joined the club back in October 1974 at the same time as John Kielthy (younger brother of Willie), Vincent Clegge and the late Nicko Whelan (RIP). It was then that Mick became part of a rowing family that has grown and evolved through decades of changes and successes.

Throughout his years he rowed in some very talented and competitive crews, attending regattas up and down the country, sharing boats and experiences with crewmates. Crews were often coxed by current President, Tom Clarkin, and the club had great mentors for juniors such as Willie Kielthy and Richie Kirwan who were senior rowers in Micks time.

Mick also was part of crews with other talented rowers like Frankie Mannion, Martin Wickham, Michael Barron, Colin Kehoe and Justin Stacey to name but a few.
Throughout his five decades with the club, Mick has been a constant—whether on the water as a rower, lending his experience to coaching, or supporting club activities behind the scenes. His commitment has been an inspiration to generations of rowers, showing how passion for rowing and loyalty to the club can continue to flourish year over year.

The recent celebration held by New Ross Boat Club at our annual table quiz was filled with heartfelt tributes and memories from fellow members, past and present. Club Chairperson, Sean Sutton highlighted, Michael’s invaluable contributions, noting that his steady presence has helped shape the welcoming and competitive culture that the club enjoys today. Members also recalled Micks encouragement to younger rowers, his leadership in the development of the Master section of the club, and his role in preserving the club’s rich heritage. While being recognised, Mick asked to say a few words:
“Thank you. Like many others, I don’t do this for recognition or reward. I think of men like Richie Kirwan and Willie Kielty—club members who came before me and who equally deserve to be acknowledged. The club has given me so much over the years. When I was a teenager, unsure of my path and searching for something meaningful, it joyfully filled the gaps in my life. It helped shape the person I’ve become, and I honestly can’t imagine my life without it.” – Mick Bailey
This milestone is a testament to Michael’s love for the sport and the deep community bonds forged through rowing. His journey with New Ross is woven into the fabric of the club’s history, symbolizing the values of resilience, teamwork, and passion that have guided New Ross through its many successes.

As the club looks to the future, Michael’s 50-year membership stands as a powerful reminder of the legacy each member can build. The entire New Ross Boat Club family thanks Michael Bailey for half a century of dedication and is proud to celebrate this extraordinary achievement with him. Here’s to many more years of shared stories, races, and camaraderie on the water.
