The River Barrow is flowing with pride as New Ross Boat Club celebrates a historic night at the Irish Rowing Awards, where two of its own were honoured on the national stage. In a momentous achievement for the club and the wider New Ross community, Anna Brennan was named Young Female Irish Rower of the Year, while Janet Walsh received the prestigious Irish Volunteer of the Year award.
These accolades mark a defining moment in the club’s nearly 150-year history, highlighting the talent, dedication, and spirit that continue to drive New Ross Boat Club forward.

Anna’s achievements extended beyond national waters. Selected for the Irish World Junior Championship team, she trained at the National Rowing Centre and competed in Canada, where she and partner Moya Knowles won their heat and the B final, finishing 7th overall. Anna Brennan’s rise through the ranks of Irish rowing has been nothing short of remarkable. Her 2024 season was packed with standout performances, including wins at Tullamore, Lough Rinn, Irish Schools, and Limerick regattas. But it was her historic victory at the Irish National Championships in the Women’s Club 1X that truly etched her name into club history—securing New Ross’s first-ever national title. Now preparing to join the University of Louisville rowing team in the U.S., Anna continues to inspire both on and off the water.
While Anna’s success is visible on the podium, much of it is rooted in the quiet, consistent work of her coach, Janet Walsh. As Head Coach of New Ross Boat Club, Janet has been the driving force behind the club’s recent resurgence. Her holistic approach to coaching—covering everything from nutrition and recovery to race-day strategy—has transformed the club’s competitive edge.

Though unable to attend the ceremony in person, Janet’s impact was felt deeply in the room. Her Volunteer of the Year award was accepted on her behalf by Club Captain Amy O’Hanlon and Chairperson Sean Sutton, who spoke of Janet’s unwavering commitment to the club and her athletes.
“We are incredibly proud of both Anna and Janet. They both thoroughly deserve all the accolades and awards that come their way. Their nominations reflect the spirit and dedication within New Ross Boat Club.” – Sean Sutton, Club Chairperson
The awards ceremony, held at Fota Island Resort in Cork, was a celebration of rowing excellence across Ireland. For New Ross Boat Club, it was a night of pride, reflection, and renewed inspiration.

“They are true inspirations. Their achievements show what can be accomplished through dedication and hard work.” – Amy O’Hanlon, Club Captain
As the club looks ahead to another exciting season, these national recognitions serve as a powerful reminder of what’s possible when passion meets perseverance. The future of rowing in New Ross has never looked brighter.
